Computer Supported Engineering Design & Design Automation

Design Automation
and the Importance of Planning Ahead of System Implementation

Research presentation:

The research presented here addresses Computer Supported Engineering Design and Design Automation.

Design automation can be a powerful tool in the continuous endeavour to cut lead times, workloads, and ultimately costs in order to become more competitive in an increasingly globalised market. Identifying a need for design automation is consequently not difficult. What becomes a lot more difficult is identifying the actual need, i.e. the type, scope, and format of the system implementation as well as the actual design tasks and activities to be automated.

For this purpose there is a need to focus on the planning phases of design automation system development.

About me:

Mikael CederfeldtMy name is Mikael Cederfeldt and I am born and raised in Upplands Väsby, a northern suburb of Stockholm, Sweden. In 1997 I moved to Jönköping to study 'Product Development and Design' at the School of Engineering at Jönköping University. Five years later I had earned the degree of Master of Science, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

While working alongside my studies, as a research technician, teacher's aid, and instructor in both material science and CAD courses, I developed an interest in both teaching and research. In the summer of 2002 I was presented with the opportunity of postgraduate studies in the Product Development research group with research focus on Computer Supported Engineering Design.

In April 2007 I presented and defended my Ph.D. thesis "Planning Design Automation – A Structured Method and Supporting Tools", earning the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

From 2007 to 2013 I was employed as an Assistant Professor and head of the bachelor programme 'Product Development and Design' at the School of Engineering, Jönköping University.

In 2014 I left the School of Engineering and my research and teaching career. Today I am employed at Jönköping University holding the position of 'Quality Assurance Coordinator'.
